We welcomed our speaker, Jenny Jackson from ‘Step by Step’ giving us an insight to the charity that she currently works for helping homeless young people.
She started off with getting us all to stand and imagine that if this was all that we had, the clothes that we were standing in and nothing else, then we would be a little closer to imagining how the young people that they help turn up at ‘Step by Steps’ doors.
Step by Step has been running for over 20 years and started out in Aldershot by Bridget Crowther who started fundraising to set up a night hostel for homeless young people. This grew into several houses around Aldershot and is now a Foyer based in Crimea Road with a Drop in Centre which offers support for Housing, Drug & Alcohol abuse and more. It also provides support in assisting with medical appointments, healthy eating, physical & sexual health, family mediation, CV writing, job hunting, education, employment and ACA awards.
Step by Step now have foyer accommodation in Basingstoke, Fareham, Havant & Gosport which, along with supported lodgings, enables them to put a roof over 202 young people per night. This is a great achievement but unfortunately they still have to turn away 3 in 4 of the people who turn to them for accommodation help.
Step by Step also work to support the 11-16 year olds by going into schools to try to prevent young people from becoming homeless by giving talks and taking those that have experienced it to inform them of how it can be.
The fundraising target for this year is £458,000 and their aim is to support up to 1500 young people.
How can we support Step by Step?
- Employers can offer work experience to help give these young people an insight to working
- Become a Supported Lodging Host
- Financial support
- £50 will provide 2 hours of counselling and support for 1 person
- £100 would purchase an emergency bed placement for one night
- Fundraising Events
- Become a Volunteer
Thank you Jenny for a very informative talk and it certainly opens our eyes to how fortunate we all are but also what we could offer to support this worthwhile charity. If anyone is interested in offering any form of support then please contact Jenny by email firstname.lastname@example.org
